The Venue
This is a pub with pleasant eating areas – there are lovely big windows to sit next to at large wooden tables, smaller booths to cosy away in along the far end of the wall, or you can perch at one of their higher round tables in the bar area itself. Although there are screens showing sport at either side of the bar area, these are not intrusive. It is clean and comfortable, spacious and bright.

The Atmosphere
There is an overwhelmingly non-threatening atmosphere here – you could easily come in here on your own with a newspaper and have a late breakfast or brunch. The atmosphere is very relaxing and homely, and the staff are a delight – they’re quick to take orders, even when it is busy, bright-eyed, and bushy-tailed when it comes to re-ordering drinks. Top marks for them.

The Food
The food is what you’d like from a pub but rarely get – no greasy offerings here. The chicken Caesar salad comes with its own separate vinaigrette dressing and the staff are quick to advise that if you order nachos, a small rather than large order was plenty to share. Both meals arrive at the same time (which is not always the case when brunching in bars) and the staff are absolutely right – the pile of vegetarian nachos with its generous topping of cheese, and accompaniments of avocado, sour cream and salsa, is the perfect quantity to share (£4.95). If you are truly ravenous, the big portion costs £6.95.

They do a nice range of sandwiches with 3 different breads and fillings, these are served with kettle chips and side salad for £5- £5.65. Pay an extra pound and get a bowl of soup or chips too. Fish and chips – fresh haddock from the market, battered or breaded, comes in at £7.50. Other offers include a full cooked breakfast with tea and coffee, Monday-Friday, until midday, for £5.

The Drink
Coffees are usually replenished without having to flag down staff and they appear, on cue, to take re-orders for all drinks. The lattes come in tall glass mugs with pretty layers of coffee and milk (£1.70). Alcoholic drinks are brought to the table too – plenty of choice of beers here – there are 10 lagers (Red Stripe / Tennant’s) and 3 ales on offer. IPA is £2.80 a pint. A glass of house wine comes in 3 different sizes and is reasonably priced at £2.10, £2.95 or £4.20. Or order a bottle for £7.95 between 3pm and 8pm, daily.

The Last Word
This is a place which is popular with locals, and it does get busy, especially on days when big sports’ matches are on. It is also definitely worth the trek here if you aren’t local, as its friendly and welcoming atmosphere is not reserved for locals and is certainly not typical of Morningside bars.
