About The Bass Rock
The Bass Rock off the coast of North Berwick is “one of the wildlife wonders of the world”. Gleaming brilliant white, the rock is home to over 150,000 gannets, the biggest island colony in the world with nests spreading out from the cliffs to cover almost every inch of available space. Gannets mate for life, they return to the Bass in February, laying their eggs from mid May. The young do not leave the nest until September-October. From 1400 this isolated island was used as a prison, conditions being particularly gruesome for the Covenanters incarcerated there in the late 18th century. Boat trips operate from March to October, leaving from North Berwick around the islands.
From the boat you will have the opportunity to view seabirds, seals and very occasionally the odd dolphin or whale. Once we are under way you will hear an informed commentary that will tell you all about the seabirds, the history of the islands and the local coastline.
The boat is licensed by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency to carry 67 passengers. As such she is fully equipped with all up to date safety apparatus, including life jackets for everyone on board.
Sula II will normally sail from within North Berwick harbour, but occasionally at low tide she will depart from Galloway’s Pier (sometimes referred to as “The Old Pier”), which is just outside the harbour, on the north shore facing Craigleith.
